This summer was a fruitful monsoon season in the Uintas though, so despite the long-term dryness, this was a wet end to the summer. I probably still wouldn't regard that source as reliable just yet, but it's a certainly a valuable data point for future years.LarryBoyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07234828576266704188noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7763075223255003562.post-32756859658028719182021-09-19T19:11:42.918-06:002021-09-19T19:11:42.918-06:00Water update: Stream was flowing in south Manila P...Water update: Stream was flowing in south Manila Park as of mid Sept 2021 :-) Was very happy to find it!Foothttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13101445949052202937noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7763075223255003562.post-64323617161995266392021-07-10T07:48:43.677-06:002021-07-10T07:48:43.677-06:00In terms of water availability, it shouldn't m...In terms of water availability, it shouldn't make much of a difference. The Uintas are a really really wet place. I definitely wouldn't rely on the always-questionable-anyhow sources between East Park Reservoir and Hacking Lake. It's also possible that the spring might dry up near Anderson Pass. Other than that though, you still shouldn't have any water issues; it's everywhere up there.

The bigger concern in a drought year? Fire. Despite how wet they are, the Uintas do burn, as demonstrated tragically by 2020's huge East Fork Fire. If you are planning to hike the UHT in 2021, please refrain from building a campfire. If you bring a stove, bring a canister-style stove with a shutoff valve (as opposed to an alcohol stove). There's a ton of beetle-killed trees in the Uintas, and it doesn't take much for them to turn into a conflagration.LarryBoyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07234828576266704188noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7763075223255003562.post-90785553881605856102021-07-09T11:25:05.115-06:002021-07-09T11:25:05.115-06:00Does anyone have a sense of whether the drought co...Does anyone have a sense of whether the drought conditions in the west generally will have an impact on normal water availability along the trail?mdh98368https://www.blogger.com/profile/06521853830976201749noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7763075223255003562.post-18874569745071286622021-06-27T12:41:52.104-06:002021-06-27T12:41:52.104-06:00I'm heading out next week. East Park Reservoir is 4.4miles from trailhead while Hacking Lake is about 20.1miles. I'm planning on doing 15mpd, which is a full day's hike and a quick 4.7 mile early morning hike to get between the 2 water sources. I'll take on a gallon of water to cover the distance, though I'm going stoveless.

Minerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14967724525891014736noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7763075223255003562.post-28864792277304918032021-06-09T21:34:37.533-06:002021-06-09T21:34:37.533-06:00It's going to be at least a partial snow climb...It's going to be at least a partial snow climb. Spikes, ice axe, and proper training highly recommended.

I'd recommend checking out conditions on Sentinel satellite imagery. It's available free somewhere on the internet, or with a pro-level subscription to Caltopo ($50/year; totally worth it). You can see the snowpack change week by week, and compare it to previous high and low-snow years.LarryBoyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07234828576266704188noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7763075223255003562.post-62117906860335099232021-06-09T17:46:04.300-06:002021-06-09T17:46:04.300-06:00Thank you for the helpful resource. If you want water between the two, you're either going to have to take a chanceo n some questionable sources (see my reply to Foot above), or venture a ways off the main route to get off the ridge. If you choose to do the latter, the topos are your friend here - basically anything that's depicted as a solid blue line on the USGS quads will be a reliable source in the Uintas.

It's honestly not a terrible idea to take the first day super easy anyhow. If you're coming from out of the area, a short/easy day and early camp will buy you a little bit of time to get used to the altitude.LarryBoyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07234828576266704188noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7763075223255003562.post-27416366017548106882021-05-19T19:24:31.967-06:002021-05-19T19:24:31.967-06:00Thanks, LarryBoy, for the great guide. We are arranging a shuttle to McKee Draw with Amanda per one of the posters above. Just to try to clarify the water situation... I expect to be dropped at the trailhead by Amanda around 2pm or so. On your CalTopo map, it looks like it's about 4.5 miles or so to the inlet to East Park Reservoir where there should be water. One option would be to do that short distance in, camp somewhere near there, fill up with water the next morning, and hit the trail in earnest. Where is the next genuinely reliable water source in your experience heading west from the reservoir?mdh98368https://www.blogger.com/profile/06521853830976201749noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7763075223255003562.post-33271756278227030422021-04-09T19:46:45.775-06:002021-04-09T19:46:45.775-06:00East Park Reservoir is reliable. You may find water in some of the "parks" (aka flat meadows) in the area, particularly if you lose a little bit of elevation to cross the parks farther downhill, where a stream is a bit more well-established.LarryBoyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07234828576266704188noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7763075223255003562.post-52650686136262897032021-04-07T19:09:47.155-06:002021-04-07T19:09:47.155-06:00Regarding water, if you're starting from the e...Regarding water, if you're starting from the eastern terminus, it looks like from the map there would be water at the East Park Reservoir around mile 8 or 10?
